INTENT
North Frodingham Primary School believes that physical education is an essential part of a child’s educational development. We aim to develop a broad, rich and engaging curriculum offering a variety of activities to enhance skills in physical education. We also strive to give as many children as possible the opportunity to compete in a variety of competitions, during school time or by representing the school at local events. Positive and inclusive participation in physical education will enable children to build, self-esteem, team work, and positive values and attitudes in P.E. and across the curriculum.
We aim to:
- Develop confidence, skills and knowledge.
- Develop physical literacy
- Provide new quality sporting opportunities
- Be proud of achievements.
- Promote fair play and respect.
- Encourage children to live healthy, active lifestyles.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities.
IMPLEMENTATION
P.E. lessons are taught using the Rising Stars framework from Reception to Year 6. This covers all areas such as gymnastics, dance and health and fitness. A progression of skills has been mapped for each year group and is used to ensure that children have opportunities to improve their work and progress further. A successful reward scheme has ensured that attendance at our cluster fixtures remains high. An information board is used for the children to access fixtures, fixture results and achievements.
IMPACT
All children are provided with at least 2 hours of fun, exciting and active PE lessons every week from both class teachers and external specialist coaches. The PE funding has enabled us to purchase additional outdoor equipment, as well as an Alexa for each classroom for ‘Stop and Move’ brain breaks, to contribute towards ‘Active 60’ for all children to ensure they are engaging in an additional 30 minutes of physical exercise every day.
Our continuing success through the Sainsbury’s School Games Awards reflects the impact of the new curriculum, increased participation in cluster tournaments and enthusiasm for sport. To keep the children healthy and active every day with at least 30 minutes of physical activity and by educating them on a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle.
EARLY YEARS
In the Early Years Foundation Unit, the following applies to the children’s learning
Physical Development
Physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives. Gross and fine motor experiences develop incrementally throughout early childhood, starting with sensory explorations and the development of a child’s strength, co-ordination and positional awareness through tummy time, crawling and play movement with both objects and adults. By creating games and providing opportunities for play both indoors and outdoors, adults can support children to develop their core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility. Gross motor skills provide the foundation for developing healthy bodies and social and emotional well-being. Fine motor control and precision helps with hand-eye co-ordination, which is later linked to early literacy. Repeated and varied opportunities to explore and play with small world activities, puzzles, arts and crafts and the practice of using small tools, with feedback and support from adults, allow children to develop proficiency, control and confidence.
ELG: Gross Motor Skills
Children at the expected level of development will:
Negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others;
Demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing;
Move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing..
ELG: Fine Motor Skills
Children at the expected level of development will:
Hold a pencil effectively in preparation for fluent writing – using the tripod grip in almost all cases;
Use a range of small tools, including scissors, paint brushes and cutlery;
Begin to show accuracy and care when drawing.
We are extremely proud to have achieved the Sainsbury’s School Games PLATINUM AWARD
The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme that was launched in 2012. The aim is to recognise schools who are committed to the development of competition across their school.
Each School Games Mark application is divided into four sets of questions. They cover the following basic topics:
- Participation - how many young people at your school are being engaged in sporting activity?
- Competition - how many different sports are being played and how many competitions are being entered?
- Workforce - how many pupils are involved in leadership activities alongside taking part in competitions?
- Clubs - how many local links does your school have with clubs or establishments from the area?
